In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the need to improve emergency response procedures in schools to protect against various threats, including natural disasters and, unfortunately, active shooter situations. In response to these concerns, many states in the United States have enacted Alyssa's Law, which mandates the installation of panic alarms and emergency communication systems in schools. One company at the forefront of providing reliable and effective intercom systems for schools is Bogen Communications. In this article, we will explore Alyssa's Law and how Bogen School Intercom Systems play a pivotal role in enhancing school safety.

Alyssa's Law: A Brief Overview

Alyssa's Law, named after Alyssa Alhadeff, one of the students tragically killed in the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida, was introduced as a response to the incident. The law requires that all public and charter K-12 schools in New Jersey install silent panic alarms connected to local law enforcement agencies, enhancing their ability to respond swiftly to emergencies.

The key provisions of Alyssa's Law include:

1. Panic Alarm Systems: Schools must install silent panic alarms in prominent locations throughout the campus. These alarms are designed to alert law enforcement immediately when activated, facilitating a rapid response in emergency situations.

2. Integration with Law Enforcement: The alarms must be directly linked to local law enforcement agencies, enabling officers to receive real-time information and respond to threats quickly.

3. Annual Testing and Maintenance: Regular testing and maintenance of the panic alarm systems are mandatory to ensure their effectiveness.

Bogen School Intercom Systems: A Vital Component of Alyssa's Law Compliance

Bogen Communications, a leading provider of communication and audio solutions, offers a range of intercom systems specifically designed to meet the requirements of Alyssa's Law and improve overall school safety. Here's how Bogen School Intercom Systems contribute to ensuring the safety of students and staff:

Be Safe and Informed

1. Instant Communication: Bogen's intercom systems allow for instant communication within the school premises. These systems include wall-mounted and desktop intercom stations that can be placed strategically throughout the building, making it easy for staff to communicate quickly and efficiently.

2. Panic Buttons: Bogen's intercom systems often come with integrated panic buttons that can be discreetly activated in case of emergencies. These buttons trigger the panic alarms required by Alyssa's Law, alerting law enforcement and initiating a rapid response.

3. Scalability: Bogen's intercom systems are highly scalable, allowing schools to adapt and expand their communication infrastructure as needed. This ensures that as schools grow or change, their security systems can grow with them.

4. Integration with Existing Infrastructure: Bogen's intercom systems can be seamlessly integrated with existing communication infrastructure, making it a cost-effective solution for schools looking to comply with Alyssa's Law without completely overhauling their systems.

5. User-Friendly Design: These systems are designed with ease of use in mind. School staff can quickly activate panic alarms and communicate with each other without needing extensive training.

Conclusion

Alyssa's Law has emerged as a crucial step in enhancing school safety, ensuring that students and staff have the necessary tools to respond effectively to emergencies. Bogen School Intercom Systems play a pivotal role in helping schools comply with Alyssa's Law while providing a versatile, reliable, and user-friendly communication platform. By investing in these advanced intercom systems, schools can create a safer environment, promoting a greater sense of security and peace of mind for everyone within the educational community. As educational institutions continue to adapt to the evolving landscape of safety, solutions like Bogen's intercom systems will remain a valuable asset in protecting our children and educators. Explosion proof bells and horns are specialized audible signaling devices designed for use in potentially hazardous environments where there is a risk of explosion. These devices are built to withstand and contain any sparks or arcs that could ignite flammable substances or gases present in the surrounding atmosphere. If you are looking for Explosion Proof  devices for use in potentially explosive environments and suitable for use around all gas groups this article can help you.

Here are some key features and considerations regarding explosion-proof bells and horns:

  1. Construction: Explosion Proof Bells and Horns are typically constructed with robust materials such as cast aluminum or stainless steel to ensure durability and resistance to corrosion. They are engineered to prevent the release of electrical energy that could trigger an explosion.
  2. Certification: These devices undergo rigorous testing and certification processes to meet industry standards and safety regulations. In the United States, the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) certification, particularly the UL 1203 standard, is commonly used to assess explosion-proof equipment.
  3. Sealing: Explosion-proof bells and horns employ sealing techniques, such as o-rings or gaskets, to prevent the entry of flammable substances into the device. This helps to minimize the risk of an explosion by containing any potential ignition sources.
  4. Spark-free operation: Special measures are taken to ensure that these devices do not generate sparks or arcs during operation. They may incorporate intrinsically safe circuitry or use sealed contacts to eliminate any potential sources of ignition.
  5. Audibility: Explosion-proof bells and horns are designed to produce loud and distinct sounds to alert individuals in hazardous areas. They are available in various sound output levels and tones to suit different environments and applications.
  6. Environmental ratings: These devices often carry specific environmental ratings to indicate their suitability for different hazardous locations. Common ratings include Class I, Division 1 or 2 (for flammable gases and vapors) and Class II, Division 1 or 2 (for combustible dust).
  7. Integration with control systems: Explosion-proof bells and horns can be integrated into safety control systems, enabling them to be activated in response to specific events or as part of an overall emergency warning system.

Stay Safe with Emergency Notification Systems

The Weather Eagle is an early  Tornado Warning System and stand alone NOAA Radio receiver designed solely for businesses, that monitors the NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards (NWR) system, operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), provides essential weather information, including tornado warnings, that can help keep businesses and individuals safe during severe weather events.

The NWR system broadcasts weather alerts, watches, and warnings directly from local National Weather Service (NWS) offices, providing timely information to the public. Tornado warnings are issued when a tornado has been detected or is imminent based on radar data or credible reports.

By having a Thunder Eagle NOAA Weather Radio receiver in your business, you can receive these tornado warnings and other important weather updates. The Thunder Eagle Radio connects to your businesses PAGING System to automatically announce severe weather and tornado warnings.  This allows you to take appropriate action, such as implementing your emergency response plan, moving employees and customers to safe areas, and taking steps to protect property and assets.

To utilize the NWR system effectively, you'll need a weather radio receiver capable of receiving the specific frequency range used by NOAA. These receivers are available in various models and can be programmed to receive alerts for specific geographical areas. It is recommended to choose a NOAA-certified weather radio that meets your business's needs and location.

In addition to the NOAA Weather Radio, it's essential to stay informed through other reliable sources such as local news stations, weather apps, and online weather services. Local emergency management agencies and community organizations may also provide additional alert systems or guidance specifically tailored to businesses in your area.

Remember, it's crucial to have an emergency plan in place for your business and to regularly review and update it with your employees. This plan should include procedures for responding to severe weather events like tornadoes, including designated shelter areas, communication protocols, and evacuation plans if necessary.

By staying vigilant, prepared, and informed, businesses can help ensure the safety of their employees, customers, and property during tornadoes and other severe weather conditions.

Horn Strobes for Fire Alarms and Emergency Notification

For Audio and Visual Fire Alarm and Notification

Horn Strobes are a type of audible and visual signaling device commonly used in fire alarm systems and emergency notification systems. They combine both a loud audible sound (generated by a horn or speaker) and a bright visual strobe light to effectively alert people in a building or area of an emergency situation.

Here are some key features and characteristics of horn strobes:

  1. Audible Alarm: The horn strobe produces a loud sound, typically in the range of 85 to 120 decibels, to ensure that the alarm can be heard over ambient noise levels. The sound is often a Continuous Horn or Temporal sound designed to grab attention and indicate the need for evacuation or response.
  2. Visual Alert: In addition to the audible alarm, horn strobes incorporate a high-intensity strobe light. The strobe light emits bright flashes of light or candela setting, usually in a synchronized pattern, to provide a visual alert. Field Selectable Candela settings include15/30/75/110cd or 135/185cd (Multi-Candela models) or 1575cd (single candela model) and Ceiling Mount 15/30/75/95cd or 115/177cd The combination of sound and visual signals helps ensure that individuals with hearing impairments or those in noisy environments can be alerted.
  3. Integration with Fire Alarm Systems: Horn strobes are typically integrated into fire alarm systems and are activated when a fire alarm is triggered. Usually 24V or less common are 12V devices. They are often installed on walls or ceilings in strategic locations throughout a building to provide comprehensive coverage.
  4. Different Output Settings: Horn strobes can often be configured with different output settings to accommodate various environments. This includes adjustable volume control for the audible alarm and adjustable intensity for the strobe light.
  5. Code Compliance: Horn strobes must comply with local fire codes and regulations, which often specify requirements such as sound output, strobe intensity, placement, and visual signaling standards.
  6. Variations: There are different types of horn strobes available to suit different applications. Some models are weatherproof and suitable for outdoor use, while others are designed for indoor environments. Variations also exist in terms of the design, color, and size of the strobe housing.

Horn strobes play a crucial role in alerting and warning individuals during emergencies, allowing for timely and orderly evacuation or response. They are commonly found in commercial buildings, industrial facilities, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and other public spaces where fire alarm systems are required. We carry major brands Including Wheelock, System Sensor and Federal Signal.

Emergency Notification Systems crucial for schools, businesses Stay Safe with Emergency Notification Systems

Emergency Notification Systems are crucial for schools, businesses, and government buildings to ensure the safety and well-being of occupants during critical situations. These systems are designed to quickly and effectively communicate emergency information to all individuals in the facility, allowing them to take appropriate actions and stay informed. Here are some common components and features of emergency notification systems:
1. Mass Notification Software: This software serves as the central management platform for sending emergency alerts. It allows authorized personnel to create and send messages across various channels simultaneously.
2. Multiple Communication Channels: Emergency alerts should be broadcasted through multiple channels to ensure maximum reach. These channels may include text messages, phone calls, email notifications, desktop pop-ups, public address systems, digital signage, social media, and mobile applications.
3. Customized Alert Templates: Predefined alert templates can be created for various types of emergencies, such as severe weather, active shooter, fire, or evacuation. This enables rapid dissemination of information while maintaining consistency in messaging.
4. Geolocation Targeting: Modern emergency notification systems often integrate with geolocation services to send alerts specifically to individuals within a designated area. This is particularly useful for businesses or schools with multiple locations.
5. Two-Way Communication: Some systems support two-way communication, allowing recipients to respond to alerts or request assistance. This feature can provide valuable real-time feedback to emergency management personnel.
6. Integration with External Systems: Integration with other safety systems, such as fire alarms, intrusion detection systems, or surveillance cameras, enables automatic triggering of emergency alerts based on sensor inputs, further enhancing response capabilities.
7. Mobile Panic Buttons: In certain scenarios, individuals may need a discreet way to signal distress or send an alert. Mobile panic buttons or dedicated panic apps on smartphones can facilitate this, instantly notifying emergency responders.
8. Testing and Reporting: Regular testing of the emergency notification system is essential to ensure it functions properly. Comprehensive reporting features provide administrators with data on message delivery rates, response rates, and system performance.
9. Integration with Emergency Services: In some regions, emergency notification systems can be integrated with local emergency services, enabling seamless communication and coordination during crises.
10. Training and Education: It is vital to train staff, students, and building occupants on how to respond to emergency alerts and utilize the notification system effectively. Conducting drills and providing educational resources can help enhance preparedness.
When implementing an emergency notification system, it is crucial to consider the specific needs and requirements of the organization or facility. Consulting with security professionals or emergency management experts can ensure the system is tailored to address potential risks effectively.

Stopping an Active Shooter's Negative Mind Pattern

What causes a person to become so angry that they become an Active Shooter with the intent of killing many innocent people? A better question is what can be done to stop them once they enter a building?

We have all experienced bad days. It can start off with sleeping late trying to hurry, spilling hot coffee all over yourself. Stubbing your toe. getting pulled over for speeding. It seems to snowball. I was experiencing a day such as and realized wow I am feeling stressed. I decided change my mood and took a hot shower and put on some Ella Fitzgerald. if she can’t get you out of a bad mood nothing can't. Then it hit me. I am playing Emergency Notification announcements for students and faculty but what am I playing for an Active Shooter?

An Active Shooter may be very angry so what can I play that is powerful enough to break the negative thought pattern. I thought of Ella but chances are they may not be a fan. That is when I remembered a Hawaiian Prayer called Ho'Oponopono it simply says "I am Sorry, Please Forgive Me, Thank you, I Love You. What if I recorded a large group of kids repeating the prayer and played it through the schools overhead paging system? Could this be enough to break the pattern? These may be words this angry person may need to hear. There are so many traumas that could have caused this person to snap.

I called Penton USA to discuss how we could add the Ho'Oponopono prayer to the Active Shooter Notification and it turns out it can be easily added. I never want to find out if this works. But not trying is much worse To find out more about an Emergency Notification System for your School or Business click on this link to  receive information about our IP and Analog solutions.
